Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and lightly grease a loaf pan.
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix with your hands until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared loaf pan and shape it into a firm loaf.
In a small bowl, stir together the fig preserves, balsamic vinegar, and remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar until smooth. Spread half of this glaze evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
Bake for 45 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, spread the remaining glaze over the loaf, and return it to the oven for another 15 minutes.
Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired.
